- Your employer also pays 8.33% of basic into the pension scheme (EPS). That is a separate benefit and is not counted here.
- EPF interest is tax-free while you are employed, except on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh in a year.
- Withdrawing at a job change resets the compounding. Transferring the account instead is usually worth far more than the amount withdrawn.
Common questions
Why is the employer share smaller than 12 per cent?
The employer also contributes 12 per cent of basic, but 8.33 per cent of it goes to the pension scheme (EPS) rather than your EPF balance, leaving 3.67 per cent here. The pension is a separate benefit and is not in this figure.
What rate does EPF pay?
The EPFO declares it each year; it was 8.25 per cent for 2023-24 and 2024-25. Change the field if it has moved.
