- Deposits qualify under section 80C, the interest is tax-free and so is the maturity amount.
- Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month, so depositing before the 5th earns a little more.
- Partial withdrawal is allowed from the seventh year; the account cannot be closed at will before then.
Common questions
What is the PPF rate?
The government sets it every quarter; it has been 7.1 per cent a year for several years. Change the rate field if it has moved since you read this.
How much can I put in?
₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year, across all PPF accounts in your name. Deposits qualify for section 80C and the interest is tax-free.
Can I take the money out early?
Partial withdrawal is allowed from the seventh year, and a loan from the third to the sixth. The account runs for 15 years and can then be extended in blocks of five.
