  • CAGR smooths out the path: the same answer comes from a steady climb and from a crash followed by a recovery.
  • It only works when nothing went in or came out along the way. For a SIP, use the SIP return tracker, which works out XIRR.

Common questions

CAGR or absolute return?

Absolute return says how much it grew; CAGR says how fast. Doubling in 3 years and doubling in 10 are both 100 per cent absolute, and 26 per cent against 7 per cent a year - which is the number that lets you compare two investments.

When is CAGR the wrong tool?

When money went in or out along the way. Use the SIP return tracker, which works out XIRR from dated cash flows.
