  • The return is your assumption, not a forecast. Markets do not deliver the same number every year, and a long fall early on hurts more than the average suggests.
  • Compounded once a year. A fund that pays out dividends you spend rather than reinvest will not follow this line.

Common questions

Lump sum or SIP?

A lump sum puts every rupee to work immediately, which is an advantage when prices rise and a disadvantage when they fall soon after. A SIP spreads the entry across months. Most people invest what they earn monthly, which is a SIP whether or not they call it one.

What return should I assume?

For long-horizon equity funds, 10 to 12 per cent is the usual planning assumption in India. For debt funds or deposits, use the rate the product actually quotes. A number you cannot defend makes the answer a wish, not a plan.
